Young Chauncey Gardeners

Some of Chauncey St.'s leading green thumbs are its youngest. About ten of our kids are showing not only some impressive leadership, coordination, and ability to share garden tools, but also a formidable knowledge of plants. For example, Justin, pictured, has been sharing his serious scientific knowledge about plant roots, root pruning, fertilizer, and decomposers like worms. We've entered the Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest as an incentive and think we've put together something special so far: twenty new sidewalk planters with arborvitae and roses; fourteen new hanging planters with vinca vines; six boxed-out tree beds with stone pavers, new soil and flowers; and seven new rose bushes in front yards. Watch out, Stuyvesant between Bainbridge and Chauncey.
